In the summer of 2010 I met an amazing artist who became a wonderful friend during my time in South Korea.
Over coffee in Seoul, we spoke about our plans for New Year’s Eve. Her plans were unlike any I’d heard of before. She suggested I try them out. I did and I’ve used the same process for most years since.
Her New Year’s Eve process consisted of cleaning, clearing, creating space, meditation, intentions and orders to the Universe. Definitely not your average drunken party plan.
On New Year’s Eve of 2010, I cleaned my tiny Korean studio apartment. I cleaned the floors, the walls and everything in between. I threw out all the things I’d been meaning to get rid of with the intention of clearing to create space. I used plant medicine to clear the space energetically, working with plant medicine is still one of my favourite practices to this day. I showered and then I meditated. I meditated on the past year, on my joys and successes, on my sorrows and challenges. I meditated on what I wanted to bring forth for 2011.
I wrote a letter to the Universe. I love writing to the Universe. It’s my method of giving thanks for all I’ve been given, sharing my intentions for the future and ordering what I want to bring into the following year. Letters or orders to the Universe can be written any time and about anything you can possibly desire. I often write with the Lunar cycle and I’ve written orders about living spaces, my work, my relationships and whatever I dream of creating. (I wrote one about a future partner months before the man who became my husband and I entered our romantic beginnings – coincidence? I think not!) You can write about anything you would like to call forth into the material realm.
There are a few guidelines I’d like to offer:
Make a sacred ceremony out of it. Gather your crystals, clean your space, light some incense, call in your ancestors or guides… Whatever sacred ceremony looks like to you. Make it special.
Be as specific as you possibly can. Imagine it, paint the picture in your head and jot down all the adjectives you can to describe it. The more specific, the better.
Don’t focus on the don’ts. While it’s important to state what you don’t want, focus on what you want to create. If you don’t want a cheating partner for example, say you require someone who only has eyes for you.
Remember that what you ask for can come with ease! If you’re asking for change/growth/evolution in your life somehow, you can ask for it to be easy! Change can often be chaotic or even painful. It doesn’t have to be, this is an example of what I mean by being as specific as possible.
Write your order from a place of love and gratitude. This is an important one. Never from a place of anger or desperation. The energy you put in is the energy you will get out. Remember that. Child like curiosity is great, as is wonder, love and gratitude. Always give thanks.
The bigger and the more ambitious, the bigger the change. The possibilities for your life are truly endless. If you meditate before you begin your order, meditate on what you would like your life to be like, what kind of relationship do you want with your future partner? What new living space do you want? What career could you imagine for yourself? What do you want your health to look like?
When you’re done, burn it or put it somewhere sacred and safe, forget about it or reread it the following New Year’s Eve, my friend always enjoyed rereading hers and seeing what she had accomplished.
The important thing to do is to trust that the order has been received, let go and don’t worry yourself about the how. The how is the part we don't get to control.
After I wrote my order on New Year’s Eve of 2010 I folded it up and put it away, ended my sacred ceremony and went to bed early.
Looking back I find it quite funny, I’m sure I ordered many things but the one I remember most was declaring that I would visit 10 countries in 2011. I didn’t know how I’d make it happen, I actually remember thinking it was a massive ask. In October of 2011 having spent most of the year backpacking, traveling and teaching, I hopped over the border between Melilla (Spain) and Morocco, making Morocco my number 10.
